Setting up a rotary machine for the first time is straightforward once you follow the steps in order. Rushing the process, or skipping a step because it seems optional, is the most common reason first sessions go wrong.
Step 1: Unbox and Inspect the Machine
Check that the machine arrived with all included accessories, and inspect the grip threading and needle bar opening for any visible damage before you power anything on. This takes thirty seconds and can save you a return shipment later.
Step 2: Attach the Grip and Cartridge
Thread the grip onto the machine until it’s snug, then insert the cartridge until it clicks or locks into place, matching the needle type to the work you’re planning. A loose grip is one of the most common causes of an inconsistent line early on.
Step 3: Connect Power
If you’re running an RCA setup, connect the cord to the machine and power supply, then to the foot pedal. If you’re running wireless, attach a charged battery pack directly to the machine. Either way, confirm the connection is secure before you turn the power supply on.
Step 4: Set Voltage and Test the Stroke
Start near the low end of the manufacturer’s recommended voltage range and test on practice skin before adjusting upward. Listen to the motor: a smooth, consistent hum is what you want, not a strained or uneven sound.
Step 5: Adjust Needle Depth
Most pen machines adjust needle depth with a dial or rotating grip section near the tip. Set it shallow first and test on practice skin, increasing gradually until your line is crisp without excessive trauma to the practice surface.
